Traffic Guide All about traffic

What are the rush hours for commuting from East Bay to San Francisco on weekdays and weekends?

I'm interested in every day of the week, both morning and evening rush hours. Perhaps someone familiar with this commute can answer from experience.

Note: I am NOT interested in checking current traffic times (as on Mapquest traffic or 511). I'm looking for ballpark predictions on when traffic on this commute is at its worst.
East Bay as in Berkeley.
Coming from Berkeley over the Bay Bridge.

  1. It kind of depends what part of the East Bay you’re coming from (east of the bridge/west of the bridge/inland). If you’re farther inland (i.e. 680 or 24) you’re going to hit additional crowded traffic.

Highway 80 from Powell Street to the bridge is the #1 most congested trip in the Bay Area, incoming and outgoing.

Normal commute hours are 5-10 in the morning and 3-7 in the evening. It gets really dense going into the city on the Bay Bridge beginning about 7:30 or 8:00 until 10:00, and the opposite direction beginning 4:00 until 7:00. (It takes about an hour to get from SF to Powell Street during rush, which normally takes about 15-20 minutes.) Fridays have heavier traffic than the other days, especially in the evening commute.

Weekends, unless there’s an accident or a ball game (or two), are pretty light. Sometimes Friday and Saturday nights can be crowded going into the city.

  2. I assume you are asking about the Oakland Bay Bridge but it is not the only bridge from the East Bay but the most direct bridge linked to San Francisco. This is a good website with cameras and a link to rush hour times because the tolls change according to rush hour times.
